Top 5 Affordable, Game-Changing Production Technologies

Highlights from the Connect2 NAB Tour 2026

The Connect2 NAB Tour, held during the BEA Convention in Las Vegas, highlighted one major shift happening across media production: the move from experimentation to practical implementation. AI, automation, cloud workflows, remote production, and leaner production teams dominated conversations across the show floor.

BEA invited Connect2 to do a tour of the NAB Show – with over 1100 exhibitors on offer, it can be difficult for attendees to know where to start and how to maximize their time. Attending a BEA tour takes the planning off your shoulders! The Connect2 tour was led by Anna Crilly and curated by Danny Thomas.  Our Affordable, Game-Changing Production Technology Tour focused on technologies that are making professional-level production more accessible for education, student media, creators, and smaller production teams.

Here are five standout technologies that we showcased during the tour.

1. Advanced Image Robotics (AIR) AI-Powered Remote Camera Production

One of the strongest themes at NAB 2026 was automation as a ‘force multiplier’ and Advanced Image Robotics demonstrated exactly what that looks like in practice. Their AIR platform enables remote multi-camera sports and live event production with dramatically smaller crews.

The system combines:

  • AirOne robotic camera movement
  • AIRApp iOS touchscreen control
  • AIR Cloud orchestration workflows

The platform is already seeing strong adoption within NCAA sports broadcasting and is of interest to educational media programs. It offers the opportunity to expand production capabilities while reducing the number of operators required.

With this it’s possible to increase the coverage of college sports and other education events.

Why it matters

  • Up to 65% reduction in crew costs
  • Faster camera deployment
  • Remote production without travel logistics
  • Ideal for sports, events, and teaching environments

This technology reflects the growing industry move toward distributed production teams and cloud-based workflows.

2. Antigravity The World’s First 360° Drone

The Antigravity A1, powered by Insta360 is what may become one of the biggest workflow shifts in aerial production. Unlike traditional drones that point in a single direction, the A1 captures everything around it simultaneously using dual-lens 360° imaging.

This ‘fly first, frame later’ workflow fundamentally changes how creators produce aerial content:

  • Pilots no longer need to frame shots while flying
  • Editors choose angles later in post-production
  • Creators gain maximum flexibility from a single flight

Why it matters

The A1 demonstrates how AI-assisted production tools are simplifying content capture while giving creators more creative freedom during editing.

For education and creator markets, it also lowers the barrier to producing cinematic aerial content.

3. SmallRig Turning Smartphones into Production Studios

SmallRig continues to grow as a favorite among educators, creators, and mobile filmmakers. Their modular ecosystem allows users to transform smartphones and mirrorless cameras into professional cinema-style production rigs without the cost or complexity of traditional setups. Tour participants were impressed by the solutions on offer.

Popular products include:

  • Camera cages
  • Smartphone rigs
  • Fluid-head tripods
  • Monitor mounts
  • LED lighting accessories

Why it matters

SmallRig products are becoming standard equipment in many university media departments because they:

  • Enable affordable high-quality video production
  • Appeal to younger creators already comfortable shooting on phones
  • Protect equipment during student use – camera cages prevent twisting and damage
  • Support modular teaching setups

As mobile production continues to rise, solutions like SmallRig bridge the gap between consumer devices and professional workflows. In fact, we were delighted to spot their magic arm in use on BBC’s Secret Garden with David Attenborough, making it possible to film activity in a swallow’s nest.

4. RØDE Microphones Affordable Professional Audio

Audio remains one of the most critical elements in content creation, and RØDE demonstrated why it continues to dominate education and creator markets. Their wireless systems and on-camera microphones deliver professional-quality sound at accessible price points, participants were impressed with the capacity and range of the mics.

Products such as the Wireless GO II and VideoMic series have become staples in:

  • Journalism programs
  • Hybrid classrooms
  • Student media
  • Independent filmmaking

Why it matters

RØDE’s systems offer:

  • Up to 300m wireless range
  • 40 hours onboard recording
  • Affordability for student kits
  • Minimal setup and technical training

The result is cleaner, more reliable audio with less time spent fixing sound issues in post-production. It’s also supportive of hybrid teaching delivery.

5. Neewer  Budget-Friendly Production Tools for Education

Neewer impressed attendees with its expanding range of affordable lighting and camera accessories designed specifically for budget-conscious creators and educational institutions.

Their ecosystem includes:

  • Affordable lenses
  • Low-cost tripods, rigs, lighting systems
  • Emphasis on attractive alternatives to premium brands
  • Growing ecosystem for creators and students

Tour participants were especially drawn to an illuminated lego house, where a probe lens with camera slider was able to film the whole interior, making the table-top structure appear as a full size set – a fun and creative way of demonstrating what Neewer makes possible.

Why it matters

Neewer products are increasingly common across higher education because they provide:

  • ‘Good enough’ professional performance
  • Extremely competitive pricing
  • Affordability for classrooms and student kits

As institutions seek cost-effective ways to modernize production environments, brands like Neewer are becoming essential entry points into professional media creation.

Final Thoughts

The biggest takeaway from BEA and NAB 2026 was clear: production technology is becoming smarter, leaner, and significantly more affordable.

Throughout the tour, key themes were:

  • Smaller production teams
  • AI-assisted workflows
  • Remote production capabilities
  • Scalable cloud-based systems
  • Lower-cost professional tools

For education, student media, independent creators, and broadcasters alike, these technologies are no longer future concepts – they are practical tools already reshaping how content is produced today.
